Mount Meru

Mount Meru

Tanzania’s second-highest peak — acclimatisation climbs, forest wildlife, and Meru crater views.

Mount Meru (4,566 m) rises above Arusha and offers a rewarding trek in its own right or a strong acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. Routes pass through forest and moorland into alpine zones with crater rim views. Wildlife on lower slopes can include buffalo and colobus; summit days are about endurance and scenery.

We recommend Meru for fit travellers who want a quieter mountain than Kili, or who want better altitude preparation. Day visitors can also experience Meru’s presence via Arusha National Park without a summit attempt.

Why climb or visit Mount Meru

Meru is steeper and more technical in places than popular Kilimanjaro profiles, yet fewer climbers mean quieter trails. As an acclimatisation tool before Kili, it can improve summit success and confidence.

  • Second-highest in Tanzania A full mountain adventure shorter than a classic Kilimanjaro itinerary.
  • Kilimanjaro prep Excellent acclimatisation trek before a Kili attempt.
  • Forest to alpine Diverse vegetation zones and crater scenery.
  • Quieter trails Typically fewer climbers than Kilimanjaro routes.
  • Near Arusha Easy logistics from the northern safari hub.
  • Park day alternative Arusha National Park showcases Meru without summiting.

Mount Meru FAQs

How many days to climb Meru?

Commonly 3–4 days. We match pace to fitness and whether Kili follows.

Is Meru harder than Kilimanjaro?

Parts are steeper; overall it is shorter. Difficulty depends on fitness and weather.

Do I need technical climbing skills?

It is a trek with some exposed sections, not technical rock climbing — still demanding. Guides and porters are required.

Best time?

Dry seasons (roughly Jan–mid-Mar and Jun–Oct) are preferred. We avoid heavy rains where possible.

Can I combine Meru with a safari?

Yes — Meru then northern parks, or safari first then Meru. Sequence depends on energy and dates.
