Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) — vast southern wilderness, river safaris, and boat-based wildlife.
Nyerere National Park covers a huge wilderness in southern Tanzania, known for the Rufiji River system, boat safaris, walking opportunities in selected areas, and a remoter feel than northern circuits. Hippo, crocodile, elephant, and wild dog stories define many guest memories here.
We plan Nyerere for travellers who want water-based game viewing and space. Fly-in access is common; road days are long if attempted overland.
Few Tanzanian parks blend boat and vehicle safari this well. Nyerere is ideal when you want southern wilderness without repeating the Serengeti template.
Dry season often eases game viewing; green months bring birding and dramatic skies.
Three nights is a strong minimum to use boat and drive windows.
Pair with Ruaha for contrast, or fly to Zanzibar after wilderness days.
Excellent if you want boat safari variety; less “classic north” than Serengeti.
River-focused wilderness and scale — different energy from northern parks.
Share dates and whether you want boat-heavy days — we will map flights and nights.
