Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park

Endless plains, big cats, and the Great Migration — Tanzania's most famous safari destination.

The Serengeti is the heart of a Tanzania safari. Wide-open grasslands, granite kopjes, and river corridors hold lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, and year-round plains game — with the Great Migration adding one of nature’s great seasonal spectacles when herds align with your dates.

Most visitors spend 2–4 nights here as part of a northern circuit from Arusha. You can focus on Mara River crossings in the north (often strongest roughly July–October), calving predators on the southern plains (January–March), or central Serengeti big-cat country that remains rewarding across many months.

Browse Serengeti safari packages below, then tell Tanzania Safari Trip your dates, lodge style, and whether migration is a must. We place camps in the right sector for the season instead of treating the park as one generic map pin.

Why visit the Serengeti

Unlike parks defined only by dense woodland, the Serengeti rewards patient game drives across open country. Sightings often start as distant movement on the horizon, then become spectacular up close — lions on kopjes, cheetahs on termite mounds, and predators working migrating herds. It pairs naturally with Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire. Many of our trips sleep inside or beside the park so mornings start early, transfers stay short, and you stay near the best activity for your travel window.

  • Great Migration Follow wildebeest and zebra herds across the plains. Northern river crossings are typically strongest July–October; southern calving plains shine January–March. Exact weeks shift with rain — we place you accordingly.
  • Big cats High densities of lions, plus leopard, cheetah, and spotted hyena. Open views and multi-day game drives make the Serengeti one of East Africa's strongest predator destinations for photography.
  • Balloon safaris Optional sunrise balloon flights over the plains end with a bush breakfast — a classic East Africa upgrade when dates and wind conditions allow. We book it as an add-on when you want it.
  • Combine with Ngorongoro Add a crater day for dense Big Five viewing in a UNESCO caldera, then continue or return through the northern circuit. Most first-time itineraries pair both parks for variety.
  • Trip styles Camping, mid-range lodges, and luxury tented camps. Travel private or small-group with pacing suited to couples, families, and seniors — we match comfort level to budget without shrinking wildlife time.
  • How long to stay Plan at least 2–3 nights in the Serengeti; 3–4 nights if migration tracking, ballooning, or slower predator focus matters. Extra nights cut long daily repositioning drives.

Serengeti safari FAQs

When is the best time to visit the Serengeti?

For northern river crossings, aim for roughly July–October. For calving and predator action in the south, January–March is excellent. Wildlife viewing is strong year-round; dry months usually offer easier game-drive conditions and clearer photography light.

How many days do I need in the Serengeti?

Most itineraries include 2–3 nights. Choose 3–4 nights if you want slower pacing, a balloon flight, or time to follow migration movements without long daily drives between distant sectors.

Can I see the Great Migration on every safari?

Migration is seasonal and location shifts by month. Tell us your travel window — we place camps and game-drive areas for the best chance that season, or design a broader big-cat and plains safari if timing does not align with crossings.

Is the Serengeti good for first-time safari travelers?

Yes. Open plains make animals easier to spot than dense bush, and guides know classic sighting routes. First-timers often combine Serengeti with Ngorongoro for variety in landscape and wildlife density on one trip.

What is included in your Serengeti safari packages?

Packages typically include park fees for included days, game drives in a 4×4, accommodation on a safari basis, and transfers between parks. Ballooning and some activities are optional extras. We list inclusions clearly on each trip page and on your custom quote.

Should I add Zanzibar after the Serengeti?

Many guests do: inland safari days, then beach and Stone Town recovery. Several packages already combine Serengeti with Zanzibar; we can also add the coast to a custom itinerary once your park nights are set.
